Used in China since time immemorial, although its medieval form was introduced to Europe around 1300 by the Germans and the Scandinavians. Its popularity came from the hands of Swiss mercenaries. It was used with great success as an infantry weapon since the end of the Middle Ages, facing troops with heavy cavalry.

Viking ax with double blade and wooden handle 8651
The use of weapons was fundamental in Scandinavian culture during the Viking Age and every free Viking - every bondi - not only owned and carried a weapon always with them but was familiar with its use and handling. Bearing arms was one of the fundamental rights of free men; Hávamál himself prays:
“may there never be more than one step away from our weapon, no matter where or when.”
The Sagas tell us that the peasants carried them with them while working in the field or on the farm and that many men slept with their weapons hanging on the wall, next to the bed. The right to bear arms was limited to free men, with women and slaves excluded.
A Viking was equipped with an axe, spear or knife and shield.
The ax was the star weapon of the Vikings and has been found in almost all sites, including in some female grave goods. These could be of different types, the most common being the short-handled axes - those used both by peasants and farmers and for war - and the long-handled ones, the war axes that were used with two hands, which were only for combat and required a lot of skill in their use.

Pike, polearm widely used by infantry, mainly to confront cavalry attacks and charges.
Pikes were used for the first time by the ancient Greeks, in the famous phalanxes, which were large squares made up of rows of pikemen, called "foot companions. At the end of the Middle Ages, the Swiss, appreciated mercenaries for more, reinvented their use. At the beginning of the Modern Age, variants appeared, with the model of the Spanish Tercios being the one that prevailed.
Clearly defensive in nature, the pike was used above all in defensive or coverage tactics: To avoid charges, stop cavalry or defend sites and positions.
The end of the pikes, at the beginning of the 18th century, came when the musket, more powerful than the harquebus, could carry a bayonet, serving as a spear in hand-to-hand combat. Shifting the power from firearms to pikes.
