Viking sword of Erik the Red with bronze handle Marto 543
Erik Thorvaldsson, the discoverer of Greenland, was born in 950 in Norway. He was the son of Thorvald Asvaldsson, who committed murder, so he was exiled with his family to Iceland where they started a new life there.
I would surely choose the nickname “the red one” because of the color of his hair.
During his youth Erik was involved in various altercations and was accused on several occasions of murder, for which he was banished from Icelandic lands for three years. During his long banishment Erik embarked on several expeditions. One of them was carried out with his family in the year 983. On this expedition he traveled to the West, that is where he discovered and explored the territory known as Greenland.
Popular culture designates Erik as the first discoverer and first explorer of the territory of Greenland. Erik spent three years of his exile on this island, which he called Greenland, which means “green land.” When Erik's exile ended, he returned to Iceland and brought with him magnificent stories of the so-called “green land,” creating several settlements in Iceland. the territory and attracted a large number of Icelanders, who saw in Greenland the opportunity to start a new life. The north was populated by settlers with the intention of obtaining large quantities of food, seal meat, whose skin was used as clothing, ivory from walrus horns, and being able to get hold of a whale stranded on the coast. At the settlement of Eystribyggò, Erik built his own estate, acquired for himself the title of “Chief Chief” of Greenland, and gained great respect and wealth.
Erik the Red had four children with his wife Theodhild. Leif Eriksson was a great explorer who reached the northern lands of the American continent, what is currently known as Canada. Erik was a fervent defender of Norse paganism unlike his son Leif and his wife, who built the first Christian church in the yard of his farm in America.

Nordic Viking sword from Oslo with bronze handle Marto 520
Legend and romantic tradition define the Vikings as a group of northern barbarians who practiced piracy and spread their fury throughout Europe, crowned with horned helmets and sword in hand and deployed on their ships as bloodthirsty warriors.
The Viking soldier prepared for battle by covering his body with leather or chain mail; They covered their head with a conical-shaped metal helmet that usually had metal or leather protectors for the nose and cheeks and a circular shield made of wood and that was usually covered by iron sheets.
The Viking sword was one of the most widely used weapons during the Viking Age. The Viking sword was a truly effective weapon on the battlefield; It was treated with a certain reverence, especially in the case of old swords that had been passed down from generation to generation, or looted from riots.
The Viking sword was designed to cut, thanks to its double edge, not so much to thrust. It was designed to be handled with one hand, since the handle was very short, so with the other hand the Viking held the protective shield.
Viking swords evolved into new typologies, adapting to changing war strategies,
The Viking sword was the favorite weapon of the Scandinavian warriors and they entrusted their lives to it “[...] You will have no other tent than the sky: the Viking is content with that; sleep on your shield, your sword in your hand; Never close yourself in, there is nothing insecure anymore, do not be afraid to confront your adversary up close…” (Esaias Tegner “Frithiofs Saga”)

Charlemagne sword with bronze hilt Marto 503
Replica of the legendary "Joyeuse", currently in the Louvre Museum, but which comes from the treasury of the Saint-Denis Abbey. This sword has been used in the consecration of all the kings and emperors of France. The sword of consecration was considered, since the 13th century, like that of Charlemagne, the "Joyeuse" (the Joyful). Its handle and the little plate, which has a plant element in the center of the guard, date back to the Early Middle Ages. Its spike, decorated until 1804 with fleurs-de-lis in the rhombuses, appears Gothic. Its hawks, made up of small winged dragons, date from the second half of the 12th century.
Charlemagne's reign has been associated with the Carolingian Renaissance, a revival of Latin culture and arts through the Carolingian Empire, led by the Catholic Church, which established a common European identity. Through his foreign conquests and his internal reforms, Charlemagne laid the foundations of what would become Western Europe in the Middle Ages. Today, Charlemagne is considered not only the founder of the French and German monarchy, which names him Charles I, but also the father of Europe.
Charlemagne wore the traditional clothing of the Frankish nation: he liked to wear a bluish cape, as well as a sword, usually finished with a gold or silver hilt. At banquets or receptions of ambassadors he wore imposing jeweled brands.
