Legend and romantic tradition define the Vikings as a group of northern barbarians who practiced piracy and spread their fury throughout Europe, crowned with horned helmets and sword in hand and deployed on their ships as bloodthirsty warriors.
The Viking soldier prepared for battle by covering his body with leather or chain mail; They covered their head with a conical-shaped metal helmet that usually had metal or leather protectors for the nose and cheeks and a circular shield made of wood and that was usually covered by iron sheets.
The Viking sword was one of the most widely used weapons during the Viking Age. The Viking sword was a truly effective weapon on the battlefield; It was treated with a certain reverence, especially in the case of old swords that had been passed down from generation to generation, or looted from riots.
The Viking sword was designed to cut, thanks to its double edge, not so much to thrust. It was designed to be handled with one hand, since the handle was very short, so with the other hand the Viking held the protective shield.
Viking swords evolved into new typologies, adapting to changing war strategies,
The Viking sword was the favorite weapon of the Scandinavian warriors and they entrusted their lives to it “[...] You will have no other tent than the sky: the Viking is content with that; sleep on your shield, your sword in your hand; Never close yourself in, there is nothing insecure anymore, do not be afraid to confront your adversary up close…” (Esaias Tegner “Frithiofs Saga”)
