Medieval gauntlet made in Toledo by artisans. This is the part of the armor used in the Middle Ages to protect the hands, fingers, wrists and part of the forearm.
Gauntlets or mittens were part of the armor worn by knights in medieval times. They were metal gloves that were used to protect the fingers, hands, wrist area and part of the forearm in the bloody battles of the time.
During the 11th and 12th centuries, it consisted of a simple mesh bag with an opening in the cuff to remove the hand.
They became leather gloves with an iron ring on the back and mesh gloves that buttoned on the sleeve. In the 14th century, the fingers were separated until the middle of the 16th century to be able to fire the pistol.
In many tournament armor from the 15th and early 16th centuries, the left hand had a mitten with separate fingers and the right hand, for the spear, was defended by a mitten.
