Used in China since time immemorial, although its medieval form was introduced to Europe around 1300 by the Germans and the Scandinavians. Its popularity came from the hands of Swiss mercenaries. It was used with great success as an infantry weapon since the end of the Middle Ages, facing troops with heavy cavalry.
Many troops or elite corps of the nobility wore it in "ostentatious" versions. Currently, the Royal Spanish Halberdier Guards or the Swiss Guard of the Vatican use this weapon not only ceremonially, but they are also trained to use it as a combat weapon.
